About

We are an alliance of several EPR organisations and NGO’s committed to reduce the environmental impact of packaging in the entire value chain. We strongly believe that this should happen on a European and international level.

Mission

Together, we have to make the move towards intrinsically sustainable packaging – packaging without harming people or the environment. There is a need for uniform answers and broadly applicable guidelines across borders. Producers and importers of packaging are facing different challenges:

  • The EU is introducing laws and regulations on packaging that they have to comply with;
  • Information, services and knowledge are out there but highly fragmented;
  • An EU-wide approach is missing for companies who put packaging on the market in multiple countries.

PackForward helps tackle these challenges by working together internationally.

Actions

The transition to global sustainable packaging demands an international approach. We have concentrated our work on areas that can have a big impact. We create publications and tools that help to find new ways to do business and to design better packaging. We currently focus on:

  • Harmonising tools for producers and importers of packed goods:
    • Design for Recycling guidelines
    • On pack disposal guide
    • Tools to check recyclability
  • Aligning definitions:
    • Recyclability
    • Non-fibre threshold
  • Engaging key actors to explore the subject of reusable packaging:
    • A network that brings the industry together to have open discussions and share experiences
    • Addressing common barriers
    • Piloting reusable packaging solutions
  • Joint research and innovation agenda for more sustainable packaging.
